Pro-Stat® Indications for Use

Mike H writes:
"To be honest, after WLS (Weight Loss Surgery), I tried dozens of protein drinks.... They all were pretty barfy, and it was horrible having to drink a 12+oz protein drink (it would usually take about 1/2hour to drink it, early on)... and the taste made you want to barf. Someone on the obesityhelp.com website mentioned Pro-Stat 64, and that you got 15 grams of protein, in a 1oz serving. I thought, even if it's gross, 1oz, of something bad, is better than 12+oz of something bad, so I ordered a case and I've been using it ever since. I keep a bottle in my desk at work, (I haven't told anyone at work that I had WLS, as I figured it's my business.... plus I've lost and gained weight several times, so no one would be "surprised" by me losing weight again.) I still use the product 3 to 4 times a day.

My mom also uses Pro-Stat 64 (she had WLS also). She was having a real problem getting in enough protein, as she was having problems eating. So, when I was home over the summer, I introduced her to pro-stat 64. While she found the taste a bit strong, she was easily able to get in at least 60 grams of protein a day, in 4 x 1oz servings.

So, both my mom and I use the Pro-Stat and my mom has told many people at her support groups about it. So, word of mouth is spreading!

Thanks again,"

Bariatric surgery for the morbidly obese is a life-saving and life-changing procedure. It is estimated that over 150,000 surgeries will be performed in the US in 2004, a number that is expected to grow.

This widely accepted surgical procedure is becoming the most effective treatment for many of those who have waged a life-long struggle, without success, to control their weight. Gastric bypass surgery is also recognized as an effective method of reducing the common co-morbidities of obesity - heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes.¹ The most common surgical procedures include, among other things, reducing the size of the stomach to a fraction of its normal size².

Most surgeons recommend that bariatric (gastric bypass) patients remain on a clear liquid diet for the first few weeks after surgery. Full liquids can generally be introduced after 4-6 weeks of recovery. After surgery, patients are typically volume-sensitive, able to ingest only small amounts at each feeding before becoming sated.

Primary Nutritional Issue:

  • One of the primary nutritional issues that results is ensuring adequate intake of protein, which is notably lacking in most clear liquid diets and is required by the body for post-surgical wound healing.
  • Protein is essential for wound healing, preservation of lean body mass, energy and weight loss. Protein is needed to help the body recover from the trauma of surgery and return the patient to robust good health. Protein is also necessary for metabolism, an essential part of weight loss, and without which bariatric patients can experience a plateau effect, during which weight loss ceases, even with controlled consumption.³
  • An important consideration for bariatric surgery patients is the type of protein ingested. The body assimilates protein only in its elemental form - amino acid/peptides. Breaking down the large protein molecule into amino acid/peptides is normally accomplished by acid hydrolysis in the stomach. Bariatric surgery patients have reduced capacity for this hydrolysis because of their smaller stomachs.
  • Pre-digested protein is more easily assimilated by those with impaired gastric processes. By ingesting protein that is already hydrolyzed (pre-digested), gastric bypass patients are providing this essential nutrient in the elemental form in which it can be rapidly assimilated by the body without reliance upon further hydrolysis.

Pro-Stat® 64 clear liquid is engineered specifically for bariatric surgery patients. Sugar free and pleasant tasting, each 1oz serving provides15g of pre-digested protein (fruit enzyme hydrolysis).

Pro-Stat® 64 clear liquid is recommended immediately post surgery and for as long as the patient requires protein supplementation.

1oz of Pro-Stat® 64 clear liquid provides the same amount of pre-digested protein as is typically provided in non-predigested form by approximately 3, 8oz (24oz) powder protein drinks.

Recommended dosage³:

  • 1st four weeks after surgery 6-8 oz/day (providing 90-120g protein). This is the critical period during which the body needs extra protein to recover from the trauma of surgery.
  • 4-8 weeks after surgery, 4-6oz/day (providing 60-90g protein). Dosage can be moderated depending on the availability of other protein in the diet.
  • From 8 weeks after surgery, 3oz/day (providing 45g protein). A fail-safe regimen to support metabolic function and ensure adequate protein intake.

Surgeon Recommendation:

"We strongly encourage all of our patients to use a protein supplement in the first three months after Roux-en-y gastric bypass. We have found that those who do, experience less fatigue, notice better wound healing, and avoid any hair loss. Pro-Stat is far and away the best protein supplement we have found. No other liquid protein provides 15 grams of hydrolyzed protein in just one ounce. The liquid is easily mixed with flavored tea, fruit drinks, jello, and yogurt. It is certainly our patient's favorite. We also find that our patients continue to use Pro-Stat for many months after surgery because they are able to achieve nice supplementation without the added calories in most protein bars and shakes."
