Pro-Stat® speed wound-healing and post-surgical recovery.
Charlele Schiela of Hernando, MS sounds like one of those wonderful people who doesn’t have time to get sick herself because she’s too busy caring for others. After her mother’s hospitalization in September and her husband’s surgery in January, much of the burden fell on Charlene to nurse them both back to health. In March she wrote to tell us how
Pro-Stat® liquid, hydrolyzed protein had helped to ease her burden and speed the recovery of her loved ones.
“In September of 2004 my mother was admitted to Healthsouth Methodist Central Hospital in Memphis, TN with a stage 3 wound in her leg. When she was discharged in early October, the hospital gave her
Pro-Stat® to take at home. The doctors said it could take as long as two years for the wound to heal, if ever.”
This was a discouraging prognosis for Charlene and her mother, but they took the Pro-Stat as recommended and, to their surprise, began to see unexpectedly rapid improvement. To Charlene’s delight her mother progressed so well that, “by thanksgiving I was able to discontinue dressing the wound as it had healed completely. [Mother] had also begun to regain weight.”
After the wound healed, Charlene’s mother resumed her normal diet and discontinued using Pro-Stat. Unfortunately, in February, 2005, she began experiencing mini-strokes, leaving her very weak. Charlene continues, “She has resumed taking the Pro-Stat for the past week and a half and her strength and attention have improved.”
As luck would have it, Charlene’s mother was not the only health issue the family was facing. In January, 2005, her husband, Jeff, suffered a recurrence of colon cancer and had surgery at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, TN. As Charlene relates, “[Jeff] weighed a healthy 200 pounds when he went in for surgery, and after 16 days in the hospital he came home weighing 175 pounds.” When Jeff had his first colon cancer surgery in 2003, he was given Pro-Sure (a powdered supplement) to increase his energy and promote weight gain following chemotherapy and radiation treatment. “It was difficult for him to drink the Pro-Sure because of the volume that was needed”, says Charlene. Based on his mother-in-law’s experience, this time he began to take Pro-Stat. Charlene picks up the story from there. “The first week he was home he took Pro-Stat and gained back ten pounds. We ran out of Pro-Stat the second week and his weight stayed the same. When we received a new bottle of Pro-Stat, he then gained another five pounds. He also showed an increase in his energy level.”
As a result of the surgery, Jeff also had an open wound in his side that needed draining and dressing. “The doctors said it would take a while for it to heal because of the previous radiation damage,” Charlene continues, “[but] four weeks after opening the wound, it has healed almost completely.”
Charlene’s experience has confirmed her belief in the in the therapeutic value of Pro-Stat. “We have been very pleased with the results of using Pro-Stat and highly recommend it to others. Roni Summers, LPN, heals pressure ulcers, improves skin status with
Pro-Stat®.
Health care professionals dealing with pressure ulcers, malnutrition and low albumin levels face difficult and often frustrating challenges. Nurse Roni Summers, LPN, of Wesleyan Healthcare in Marion, Indiana faced just such a challenge recently when a resident transferring back from the hospital was found to have serious pressure ulcers.
Roni was so pleased with the outcome of this difficult case that she called Medical Nutrition USA, manufacturer of
Pro-Stat®, to report what happened.
“The resident came back with terrible pressure ulcers,” explained Roni. “Bilateral heel ulcers and a deep stage IV ulcer on the coccyx, it was horrible.” Summers and her co-workers knew that nutritional intervention and nursing care had to be implemented right away.
Wesleyan was using powder supplements* for residents who needed extra protein and wound-healing regimens. Diane Bowman, the dietitian, had recently told Roni about liquid
